Sightsavers is an organization solely focused on making sure nobody has to go blind. There are many parts of the world where people go blind from treatable causes, thus their mission is to help those in need and make the world a better place. It was founded at the start of 1950 by Sir John and Lady Wilson. Sightsavers has since gorwn its presence into several countries and impacted the lives of countless people. A recent blog on their website shows what happened at the recent convention the company was involved with.
This blog post was written by Gertrude Oforiwa Fefoame, the present candidate on the board for Ghana. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) is a vitally important organization in the world. Its purpose is to ensure those with disabilities are treated with respect and hold the same rights as anyone else. Throughout the blog post Gertrude Oforiwa Fefoame outlines several improvements she would like to see. Strengthening of organizations and more awareness opportunities are key to spreading the values of the CRPD.
However, most importantly is seeing disabled people working at all levels in organizations. That allows for advocacy movements to come from the heart, and break the barrier between the disabled and everyday person. CRPD members have to be more proactive in their respective communities. States need to have disabilities covered in policy, and keep an ever present discussion on the topic. Visibility and talk is the best way to normalize people into daily life.
Sightsavers is an organization at the forefront of a movement across the world to have disabled people recognized just like anyone else. They have done work in developing regions, and have saved the eyesight of countless people. Sightsavers maintains an active role in the global community in their continued fight for people’s rights. There may one day be a time when everyone, regardless of issue, will be treated like an individual with fairness.
