Businessman Louis Chenevert Working Years

Canadian Businessman Louis Chenevert is the former CEO of United Technologies Corporation. Before he joined UTC, he worked with other businesses. One of the companies he worked with was General Motors. He was the assembly line production manager. He had been hired by a man known as Guy Hachey who remains one of his best friends until today. Louis Chenevert worked for General Motors for 14 years. After these years, he felt that although there was nothing wrong with the auto industry, it was time to, make a change and move to another industry where he would also explore his experience in production management.

Louis Chenevert decided to jump to the aerospace industry which offered lucrative opportunities. The experience he had gathered from the auto industry would be very useful in the aerospace industry. He was advised by one of his fellow employees at GM, Karl Krapek to take a position in one of the leading firms in the industry. When he made the switch, he moved to Pratt & Whitney, a subsidiary under UTC. Interestingly, his adviser Krapek joined UTC as the president and CEO in 1999-2002.

In 1993, Louis Chenevert made a move to Pratt & Whitney Canada. This was a subsidiary of Pratt & Whitney from the USA. The company is an aircraft manufacturing company located near Montreal. Pratt & Whitney Canada was mainly involved with the manufacture of small jet engines while the one in the USA was for large jet engines. Louis Chenevert performed so well in a short time, and three years after, he was appointed for a position in the P&W USA. He was appointed executive vice president in charge of the operation in the company.

Before he left the Canadian firm, he had brought down the cost of production by 10 percent. He had also made sure that the manufacturing lines were running smoothly such that there was no cause of an error. While working with GM, he had been taught the importance of precision. With a production rate of one car in every minute, there was no allowance for error. Things had to be done in the right way. This is a vital lesson which helped him rise to the position of the CEO at UTC.
